During the Pacific War, there was a lion living in a cage at a zoo, accepting its fate and following its father's advice: "Never get angry. If you get angry, you will lose your life." Private Kusano, who studied animal husbandry at an agricultural school, was given the task of shooting the lion (the title story). These six exquisite stories depict the struggles of those whose lives were distorted by the war, including "On the Way Home," which reminisces about a day trip skiing in 1965, and "The Wanderer," in which a student officer encounters a strange soldier in Manchuria.
